BIOTECHNOLOGIST OUTLINE
I. Nature of Work
A. Biotechnologists study organisms and animals so we can make new products to help people..
B. Some things biotechnologists study include bacteria, plants, animals, and any microscopic living organisms.
C. Uses research collected from studying other animals and bacteria to make health products so people can be healthy.
D. Biotechnologists usually work in teams interacting with several people like technicians, engineers, bussiness managers, and some with even customs
E. They usually would research in laboratories using a lot of equipment and some experiment on plants or animals.
F. Biotechnologists usually don't work with toxic or unsafe organisms, when they do they have heavy safety procedures.
G. Studying dangerous organisms though can be really helpful for finding out how to cure diseases through genes.
H. Biotechnologists usually work for around 40 hours a week which is a common amount of time people usually work.
I. Some Biotechnologists work for a more odd amount of hours especially if they work in the fields.
J. The number of hours a Biotechnologist works also depends on their nature of work.
II.Training And Qualifications
A. Most Biotechnologists need a Ph.D. degree in biology or a sub field of it.
B. A Ph.D. is necessary for industrial research, college teaching, and independant research.
C. A master's degree is good for jobs that require alot of research and is probably a big need for them too.
D. A bachelor's degree is fine for nonresearch jobs in biotechnology like testing and more.
E. Some courses recommended to take for a job in Biotechnology are law/criminal justice, algebra, chemistry, Biochemistry, and pre-calculus.
F. In Biotechnology its helpful if you are creative, careful, and keep track of complicated things
G. Those who want to work in the environment in Biotechnology should take environmental courses.
H. Most of the colleges and universities have bachelor's degrees in biological science and advanced degrees.
I. Biological scientists should be able to manage t to work independently and as a part of a team also to be able to communicate clearly and concisely.
J. As a Biotechnologist gets more experience and works well they may gain more control on research and become lead researchers.
III. Employment
A. In 2006 Biotechnologists held about 87,000 jobs and this was with biotechnologists in universities and biology faculty not included.
B. About one-third of the biotechnologists were recruited by Federal State also local governments.
C. Federal Biological Scientists mainly worked in departments of Agriculture, interior, defense, and national institutes of health.
F. Demand for a job in Biotechnology is growing although had decreased from 2006 to today by nearly 10,000 jobs.
E. Slightly more than one-third of biotechnologists were recruited by manufacturing firms.
F. It's predicted that jobs in biotechnology will grow 9 percent from 2006-20016
IV. Job Outlook
A. Biological scientists should expect competition for jobs because of a recent expansion in research funding.
B. Federal Government funds much of the basic research and a lot in areas of research in medicine.
C. Biotechnologists have faced very rapid employment since the 1980s making many biotechnology companies grow a lot.
D. Many biological scientists are needed to decide the environmental impact of industry and government actions to prevent and/or correct
environmental problems such as pesticide usage.
E. Biotechnologists are less likely to lose their job during recessions because many are employed for long-term research.
F. However, if the economy gets worse then a Biotechnologists' pay could be lowered even in some parts of the job where they have to
work with dangerous bacteria and what not.
V. Earnings
A. Biological Scientists can earn as low as $40,820-$129,510 a year
B. Average pay today for biological scientists is $76,320 a year.
C. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, statistics show that in 2007, Biological scientists earned $34,953 a year as a beginning salary.
D. A Biological Scientist's earnings mainly depends on experience and type of job in biotechnology they have like marine biotechnologists.
E. Although a Biotechnologist may earn as low as $34,953 as a starting salary, the degrees they have can help give them a better starting salary
but if one doesn't have many and mostly just the required they will earn a low salary.
F. Related jobs include medical scientists, agricultural and food scientists, conservation scientists, foresters, engineering and natural sciences managers and health-
related jobs such as physicians.
